Central Asia Institute was founded by an American mountain climber who was recued
and brought back to health by villagers high in the mountains of northern Pakistan. As a way of thanking them, he decided
to raise funds to build a school for the village. He has since funded over 55 schools, several women's vocational
centers, a Sherpa training center, and potable water projects in northern Pakistan and Afghanistan. The group's
emphasis is on educating girls and women because after they go away to high school, they return to their villages and
become leaders who help improve the villagers' standard of living and quality of life, whereas the young men who go away often
don't come back home.
